In Chile, where most of the mining activities are concentrated in the arid regions, the interest in paste and thickened tailings technology has increased dramatically since 2002, when Paste seminar was first held in this country. Several mining companies have opted for this alternative in the attempts to conserve and recycle water.

During four days the authors of over 40 articles discussed advantages and challenges of the thickened tailings technologies, focusing on water conservation issues and its more responsible and efficient use.

We were honoured to welcome 315 delegates from 16 countries to 2009 venue - the beautiful beach town Viña del Mar, famous for its hospitality, seafood and historic sites.

A fantastic technical programme was put together thanks to the efforts of the authors, editors and reviewers. The authors of over 30 technical papers and 17 posters analysed challenges and advantages of the P&TT technology and attempted to answer the crucial question of this seminar: how can we possibly cope with the water scarcity, reduce its consumption and reuse it in an environmentally conscious way? and how can P & TT help us solve problems of sustainable water use and conservation, especially in the light of increasingly stricter environmental and closure regulations.

Producing such event as Paste was a rather challenging task which required a lot of disciplined effort from all of us. The Seminar would not have been possible without all those people who put in long hours of hard work, dedication, energy and talent. We thank them most sincerely for their contributions of time and expertise to this project. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to:

The authors for their invaluable contributions, monumental efforts of meeting deadlines, and willingness to travel across the world in order to share their knowledge and experience.

The reviewers for willingness to invest their personal time and correct the articles, providing insightful comments thus ensuring the quality of the proceedings.

Sponsors for their generous support, especially in these difficult times of economic instability.

Australian Centre for Geomechanics for the opportunity to hold the event in Chile, and, particularly, Richard Jewell and Andy Fourie for their advice and technical guidance.

The Gecamin team for their meticulous planning, hard work, professionalism and continuous commitment to making this Seminar a success.

Staff at Cabildo plant, and, particularly, Roberto Martínez, for assistance in coordinating the plant visit and willingness to spend Saturday morning showing us around.

And to you, participants and supporters, whose interest and enthusiasm made this Seminar possible and the whole experience extremely rewarding and enriching.
